Empowering Students with an Entrepreneurial Mindset
Sponsored by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
November 26, 2019
9:00 - 10:15am
Delta Hotels by Marriott, 225 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, NB - Ballroom A
A recent study shows that 85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 have not been invented yet. Regardless of their career path, young people today need an entrepreneurial mindset in order to thrive in our rapidly changing world. This session opens with a 48-minute documentary called Mindset Matters, which explores the future of work and its influence on education. Participants then learn how to lead PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs in their classrooms. This real-world project helps grades 4-8 students become design thinkers by creating their own business ventures. Students conceptualize product ideas, complete market research, make prototypes and finalize their products to sell at a school-based sales event. They also learn about social responsibility by donating a portion of their profits to charity.
Bill Roche supports NB school districts with the implementation of entrepreneurship and financial literacy education. His highly engaging learning model makes it easy to differentiate instruction for diverse groups of learners. Bill engages audiences with hands-on activities and real-life stories that feature practical, easy-to-implement solutions for the classroom.

The Missing Piece: How Narrative Reflection Enhances Everything, from Experiential Learning to Career Counselling & Advising
Sponsored by NBCDA
9:00 - 11:45am
Delta Hotels by Marriott, 225 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, NB - Ballroom C
Meaningful and effective career management initiatives that link research and theory to practice (Franklin, Yanar & Feller, 2015) are critical to supporting students, clients, employees. Narrative assessment provides the opportunity for individuals to further uncover who they are--their desires, assets, strengths, experiences, interests, and the network of people who supports them--to uncover new possibilities. As practitioners help clients navigate multiple transitions across their career and work lives, accountability to take inspired action and reach new possibilities is imperative to propel employees, clients, or stakeholders forward. As Experiential Learning is becoming common practice in Canada, a need has emerged for a systematic reflection process, to integrate that learning.
Participants will learn the career development theory behind this qualitative / narrative assessment which will help them understand the rationale behind its development. We will cover an understanding of narrative assessment concepts including storytelling, storylistening and the temporal architecture of stories. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the narrative assessment system and related tools. We will then provide learning opportunities to develop foundational narrative assessment career coaching skills. Case examples will be provided and an opportunity for interactive discussion so participants can learn how to adapt for their populations. The PDI will provide immediate access via credits to the online storyteller web application to practice their skills later.
